Acid proof flooring protects concrete and steel floors in plants where acids, alkalis and solvents are handled, spilled or stored. Ordinary concrete and ordinary ceramic tiling fail quickly in those conditions, because acid attacks the cement matrix, the surface opens up and the structure underneath begins to go. An acid resistant floor replaces that with a layered system of chemical resistant material bedded and jointed in resin mortar, so that the floor itself becomes the barrier.
Kothari Corrosion Controllers has manufactured and laid acid proof flooring since 1969 from our works at Odhav, Ahmedabad. We make the acid proof tiles, acid proof bricks and acid resisting mortars ourselves and carry out the flooring work with our own trained applicators, so one supplier is responsible for both the material and the finished floor.
Specialty work includes coal tar epoxy coating and screeding, epoxy tank coating, stoneware pipe jointing and acid and alkali resisting joint grout filling. See our services for the full scope.
Three things decide the system: the chemical and its concentration, the operating temperature, and the mechanical load the floor has to carry.
| Service condition | Typical system |
|---|---|
| Light to medium chemical spillage, foot and trolley traffic | Acid proof tiles 10 mm to 15 mm in furane or phenolic mortar |
| Heavy traffic, impact, forklift movement | Acid proof tiles 20 mm to 30 mm, or 38 mm brick flooring |
| Deep immersion, tanks, pits and vessels | Acid proof brick lining 38 mm or 75 mm over a membrane |
| High temperature service up to 900 C | Brick or tile laid in K silicate mortar |
| Hydrofluoric acid, fluoride salts, strong hot alkalis | Carbon bricks with carbon filled mortar |
| Seamless hygienic floor, up to 90 C | Epoxy screeding 3 mm to 10 mm |
The mortar sets the temperature limit of the finished floor, not the tile. Furane and phenolic work to 170 C, cashew CNSL to 190 C, K silicate to 900 C, and epoxy, polyester and sulphur to 90 C. Full comparative data is on our technical details page.
Typical structures: chemical process floors, acid storage tank yards with dyke walls, battery rooms, DM plants, neutralising pits, production plant drains, reaction vessels, anodising and electroplating process floors, RCC pickling tanks, effluent treatment plants, zero liquid discharge tanks, scrubber floor areas and acid collection pits.
Industries served: chemicals, pharmaceuticals and bulk drugs, dyes and intermediates, fertilizers, petrochemicals and refineries, power plants, steel and galvanising, zinc smelters, electroplating and anodising units, textile process and dyeing houses, dairy, food and beverage plants, breweries, starch plants, auto components, aircraft component plants and electronics.
We supply and install across India and export acid proof flooring materials to African countries, the Middle East and across the Asian subcontinent. Call +91 9825006626 or email info@acidproof.com with your drawing, the chemicals handled, the concentration and the operating temperature, and we will recommend the system and quote it.
